Jean-Pierre, a French doctor and his wife Jane – a touchy, brave, feminine feminist – come to Five Lions Valley in Afghanistan to bring medical care and aid to the rebel tribesman fighting the Soviet invaders. But is Jean-Pierre’s plan that clear cut – and why does he keep a secret radio? Then Ellis Thaler, a seemingly typical radical American with all the correct liberal attitudes comes to the valley.  But his intentions are quite different.  He wants to organise all the various tribes, who hate each other as much as they hate any foreigners, to combine against the Soviets.  And that’s when the real trouble begins. Jane’s baby daughter Chantal is one complication. The activities of resourceful KGB colonel Anatoli provide more and the closing of the Khyber Pass completes the circle of acute danger and menace.
