  • Gary Cheese is twenty-two years of age and works for British Telecom as an operator. Gary's hobbies include TV, girls, music and the detective fiction of  twentieth century's best selling novelist, the now legendary P.P. Penrose. And, of course,  attempting to re-animate the dead. He hasn't been having too much luck with the latter so far. But now Gary's got this new job in telecommunications and according to this bloke he met down the pub, there exists certain technology that can actually let you speak to the dead. Apparently it's been in operation for years. FLATLINE, it's called - a chatline to the dead. But it seems something went very wrong: the dead had certain things to say to the living that the powers that be couldn't allow to be heard. Gary's determined to find out the truth and as he's a bit of a fan boy who really wants to speak to his hero, the late great Mr. Penrose.   • Book VI of Philip José Farmer's Dungeon series. Fleeing from the mysterious creators of the Dungeon, Clive Folliot breaks through to the ninth level suddenly, completely alone. Stranded in a freezing polar wilderness, he faces certain death from the cold but one urgent question drives him onward.  His new surroundings are frighteningly similar to the world Clive left so long ago.  Has he fought through the entire Dungeon only to find that Earth is the ninth and final level?   • Book II of The Finest. They were the Finest Creations - mystically forged creatures of perfection sent by the creators to aid the Fallen (mankind) during their mortal existence. Though they resemble ordinary horses they are highly intelligent, capable of communicating telepathically and completely moral. They are assigned to bond with individuals of great potential and then protect them from harm while guiding them along a path of virtue. Gallant-Stallion has found his charge, a young girl by the name of Kalantha, whose brother is soon to be king and the pawn of a deceitful and murderous bishop who covets the royal power and has allied himself with creatures of the dark arts. The Finest has successfully removed her from his influence but now must contend with the other temptations of the world--the lure of power, the mystery of learning and knowledge, and the intrigue and freedom of adventure and independence. Kalantha is still young and bitter over her lot in life, betrayed, envious, and scared, and her mentor Gallant-Stallion is unsure of how to lead her as is his duty as her Finest. Cover art by Romas.
  • Book III of The Dragon Mage; Book XI of Deverry. Ancient hatreds and ancient wrongs bind Rhodry Maelwaedd, the mad berserker and his blood-sworn enemy Raena, the shape-changer and prophet. Both have glimpsed the great secret of the dweomer, that each soul leads many lives. Neither understands what they have seen.
