English Lord Albert Esketh and his rich American socialite wife, the spoiled Lady Edwina travel to India to buy a prize horse from the Maharani of Ranchipur. There, Edwina renews acquaintance with an old friend and former lover, Tom Ransome, once a brilliant engineer, now a dissolute alcoholic and tries to seduce distinguished Hindu physician, Dr. Rama Safti,  who is the elderly Maharani’s personal choice to succeed her. The Maharani is aware of Edwina’s reputation and warns her – she will do anything she must for the benefit of Ranchipur.  Then the area is ravaged by a two-fold natural disaster: a series of earthquakes that shatter the dam and many buildings, and the ensuing flood, exacerbated by pouring rain, which wipes out buildings and bridges. Who and what will survive the massive disaster? Also starring Joan Caulfield and Michael Rennie.  Originally made as The Rains Came (1939) and based on Louis Bromfield’s novel of the same name.
