Cinda Hayes knows she no longer believes in the legal system they was she used to. She leaves her job as Chief Prosecutor of the Sex Crimes Unit to become Director of the Boulder County Rape Crisis Centre. But she hasn’t been long in her new job when she agrees to defend a death row murderer, Jason Smiley, also convicted of rape. She abhors the crimes he’s committed – and she abhors the death penalty more. Despite the tension her acceptance of the case is causing at the Crisis Centre, Smiley’s claims of innocence are so persuasive that Cinda finds herself beginning to believe him. But the more involved she becomes with the case, the more her life is going awry – including her relationship with criminal lawyer Sam Holt who’s also had dealings with Smiley and who is trying to tell her that the man she’s convinced herself is a victim of a miscarriage of justice is as dangerous as they come…
