From Moscow to the Pacific on the Siberian Railway is THE big train ride, a journey of over 6,000 miles, seven time zones and 8 days.  So Newby set off with his wife, a photographer and an official Russian guide.  Equipment included a squash ball basin plug, an inexhaustible supply of Russian sausage and an unfailing sense of humour.  Hindered at every turn by Russian officialdom and discouraged by lack of food and drink, Newby still managed to collect a wealth of irreverent detail on the lives of the inhabitants of the USSR.
