On his way to school, shy, ten year old Bastian ducks into a bookstore to avoid bullies. He asks the shop owner, Mr. Coreander, about a book he sees called “The Neverending Story,” and against Mr. Coreander’s advice, Bastian begins reading it in the school attic. The novel is about Fantasia, a fantasy land threatened by “The Nothing,” a darkness that destroys everything it touches. Fantasia’s ruler, the Childlike Empress, has fallen ill, and the young warrior Atreyu is tasked to discover the cure, believing that once the Empress is well, the Nothing will no longer be a threat. After many magical adventures, Atreyu discovers that the kingdom needs the help of a human child to survive. At the Magic Mirror Gate, a mirror that shows the viewer’s true self, Atreyu sees a boy which Bastian recognises as himself. The only way to save the land of Fantasia and the Childlike Empress is for Bastian to give her a new name – but Bastian must believe in Fantasia…Here are all the wonderful inhabitants of Fantasia – the Rock Biter, the Racing Snail, the beautiful young Empress, the brave warrior Atreyu and of course, Falknor the luck-dragon. This is the original story, not a film novelisation. With black and white illustrations by Roswitha Quadflieg.
