This story follows Thea Hodge, 12 years old in 1907, from the city to the Adelaide Hills.  There are orchards and hedges, Lizzie Potter’s dazzling shack, the sensual and mysterious Rina, a lame Father who drinks, a sadistic teacher and the sisters Love and Mercy who entertain hopes and paying male customers.  There is also exotic Gladwish House, where deformity is not all it seems and where friendly Old Cuff – bent like a hoop – creeps along with the aid of a pocket mirror.
