  • Left fatherless and almost penniless at 15, Roberts left school took on the  burden of supporting himself and his mother.  More interested in writing than in commerce, he eventually became a full-time writer.   He was a war correspondent and considered going to Oxford after the War and after overhearing the conversation of four young undergraduates in a tea-shop while on leave, realised  that Oxford  was not for him, given his wartime his experiences. He said: I would  rather... write an imperishable sentence than build the Riaito Bridge or stack my furniture in 10 Downing Street. In 1920, he became editor of the Nottingham Journal. He travelled widely and often used his experiences abroad in his novels. First published in 1931, this autobiography opens with Roberts in Vienna, looking back over the first 35 years of his life and experiences and contemplating the next 35 years.
  • Life is very different now in the rambling Gilbreth house. When the youngest was two and the oldest eighteen, Dad died and Mother bravely took over his business. Now, to keep the family together, everyone has to pitch in and pinch pennies. The resourceful clan rises to every crisis with a marvelous sense of fun - whether it's battling chicken pox, giving the boot to an unwelcome boyfriend, or even meeting the President. And the few distasteful things they can't overcome - like castor oil - they swallow with good humor and good grace. Belles on Their Toes is the entertaining sequel to Cheaper by the Dozen.
  • An unflinching look at where we are at this unprecedented moment in history.  A clear and present environmental danger is staring us in the face, a danger that is screened out by perceptual filters formed by our current values and beliefs. And should the truth get through to us, we experience a paralysis in the face of adversity that is fueled by a sense of impotence and by the psychological and institutional barriers that stymie us.But there is good news. Experts maintain we still have time to avoid this breakdown if we slow down and turn onto alternative roads that will lead to a life still rich in opportunity, choice, and quality. But to begin applying brakes and turning aside, we must see with clarity the we're on now, how we got here and what the other possibilities are.
  • A magnificent pictorial biography of brothers George and Ira. George died in 1937 at the age of 39, at the peak of his career. His works ranged from Swanee to Rhapsody In Blue, from An American in Paris to Porgy and Bess in a career unparalleled in the history of American music and his talent in combining popular musical elements with traditional symphonic structure or the jazz beat with the classical form is yet unmatched. Ira was the lyricist who collaborated with his younger brother to create some of the most memorable songs in the English language of the 20th century. Together, they wrote more than a dozen Broadway shows, featuring the hits I Got Rhythm, Embraceable You, The Man I Love and Someone to Watch Over Me. After George's early death. Ira continued to write with composers Jerome Kern, Kurt Weill, Harry Warren and Harold Arlen. Lavishly illustrated with colour and black and white photographs, including photogrpahs of the rarely-seen Gershwin art collection. Large, heavy book.
  • 'The difference between the men and boys is in the price of their toys...!'  Lee Liberace - born Władziu Valentino Liberace - was more than a pianist, singer and occasional actor - he was a personality, larger than life. For his fans, he was the master of music, money and a man of iridescently good manners. He never avoided confronting - and triumphing over - the problems of success. He was and still is a fascinating figure, known for his diamond-studded ermine coat, his grand piano - shaped swimming pool (very outrageous for the 1950s); his llama and ermine bedspread and his rare Rolls Royce (one of seven only made) in which he was chauffeured on-stage for one particular gig. From the 1950s to 1970s, he was the highest-paid entertainer in the world. Illustrated with black and white photographs.
  • One thing makes this a stand-out gardening book - the author, while having due respect for botanical science, is inclined to go her own way so much of the information in this book comes from her own beliefs. Therefore it is  a very practical and interesting book. She covers garden planning and structure, small gardens, rock gardens, propagation, seedlings, lawns, trees and shrubs, camellias, azaleas, rhododendrons, lilacs and roses, annuals and perennials, bulbs and tubers, climbers, vegetables and fruit and so much more - and all for Australian conditions. With colour and black and white photographs.
