  • Long hailed as a film well ahead of its time and the first sci-fi classic, Fritz Lang's 1927 Metropolis is set in 'the new millenium' - a society deeply divided. The luxurious skyscrapers, expansive stadiums, highways in the sky and idleness belong to the wealthy, the thinkers - those able to make plans and invent; and then there are the workers, those who live in an underground city who put the inventions and plans into action  with unremitting physical labour. Those beneath the ground look to Maria, a beautiful young woman who predicts there will be a day when a mediator will come who will unite the ruling class and the workers.  Freder, the son of a wealthy man, sees Maria and falls in love - and when he follows her he sees, for the first time, the dangerous conditions and deadly explosions that the workers endure. He vows to put things right - but his father wants Freder's mother Hel, who died giving birth to him, to be 'resurrected' in the form of a robot - and he wants Maria kidnapped and her likeness given to the robot so the workers will lose faith in her. The 'false' Maria begins to wreak mayhem and murder throughout the city - can the love of Freder and Maria withstand such deception and disaster? With a cast of 25,000  extras, vast sets and amazing special effects that had never been seen before on the big screen.
