  • In the early part of the 21st century, the U.S. renewed its commitment to the space programme, building a new base on the far side of the moon.  The first four missions went off without a hitch. But on the fifth mission, disaster struck. First came an urgent message from Farside Base -then silence. The launch of FS-6 was moved up to mount a rescue mission but when they reached Farside, the situation they found was beyond all human comprehension.  The station was a mess, with graffiti scrawled everywhere, including the mysterious phrase, 'food for the Moon.' Two members of FS-5 were dead, obviously murdered. A third died of fright not long after they found her. And the mission commander and two others were missing. The FS-6 team were now de facto detectives in a murder investigation and hanging over them all was the threat that whatever had claimed the sanity and lives of their colleagues migh , at any moment, strike again.

  • In the early 23rd century, Mars has been terraformed and is now politically independent.  There are canals and shallow seas that are subject to sudden storms and rapid freezes. It's also warmer than ever with plants and animals specifically engineered for life on the planet.  Many of the First Hundred have died and the remaining few are mythological figures to the majority of Martian youth. But on Earth there are troubled times.  Terminal overpopulation, reduced resources and bitter nationalism are rife and many Terrans see Mars as a potential escape.  Thus the safety of the Martian culture depends on the health of Terran cultures.  A campaign is begun on Mars to help Earth through this difficult time. But during an assignment on remote Tercet, one of that planet's Mystic Seers taught him a whole new way of thinking and Pol began to ask questions - that would bring him into direct conflict with the Cadre.
