Cooper, Australia's first acknowledged playwright, lived a full life: Actor, journalist, politician, a bankrupt who once fought a duel in Sydney with his brother in law. He wrote popular farces, comedies and sensation dramas and was the first Australian playwright to have his work produced overseas. Colonial Experience is one of only two plays which survive.
