Jane Winfield IV. As publicist for the Southmere Opera Festival, Jane Winfield was a short hop from London, where her solicitor husband James Hall pursued his career in Gray's Inn. The night of the dress rehearsal for La Traviata sees James arrive in Sussex in time to discover the body of festival producer Julian Kingsley sprawled at the base of an ancient tower. It was clearly murder - what wasn't clear is why anyone would want to kill the goose that laid the golden guineas. Or what connection there could be between a small yet prestigious music festival and the string of violence coincidences. The cast and crew were a jumble of past and future romances that took Jane, Andrew Quentin and a Milton-quoting investigator to unravel.
