Volume I covers pastoral expansion, life on the frontier, the ways of the bush, cattle country, the indigenous peoples' response, squatters, shearers, cattlemen and drovers, itinerants and missionaries; Volume II covers the conquering of the seemingly immeasurable distances, the mining communities and outback towns, cattle stations, how education and healthcare were accomplished, leisure activities, the image of the outback and preserving its magnificent heritage. Both volumes have magnificent photographs in colour and black and white, as well as reproductions of art depicting the outback life and historical documents.
