margaret-holmes-michelle-cavanagh
Margaret Holmes: Michelle Cavanagh

Margaret Joan Holmes (nee Read, 1909-2009) was an Australian pacifist and feminist who established the New South Wales branch of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) in 1960 and campaigned against the Vietnam War and nuclear weapons, as well as working for Aboriginal and women's rights. Born into a wealthy white Australian family in 1909, she had all the benefits of money and education, and could have lived a privileged life of leisure. Instead, she became a pacifist and chose to actively campaign against injustice in a variety of areas - particularly war and nuclear weapons, Aboriginal rights and women's rights. She was a compulsive letter-writer, writing almost daily to politicians about whatever she wanted to discuss, and was an Amnesty International member decades before it had the profile it has today. She also worked tirelessly within her local community, delivering Meals-on-Wheels to local elderly people well into her 90s, often to people much younger than herself, driving her own car until she was 94. She was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2001 (only accepting the award in the hope that it would help to promote the work of WILPF). She died in 2009, nine months after celebrating her 100th birthday with her family.
