R'shiel Tenragan, daughter of the First Sister Joyhinia, and her half brother Tarja find themselves caught up in their mother's political intrigues.  R'shiel is to be shipped off to a neighbouring Kingdom and Tarja has defied Joyhinia's orders at the cost of his freedom.  Together they flee the Citadel,  Travelling into unknown parts of the realm, they hear a rumour that the magical race of Harshini is not extinct - a Harshini outcast, Brak, is searching for the demon child, the half-human offspring of the legendary Lorandranek.  Caught up in the rebellion against the Sisterhood, R'shiel and Tarja cross paths with Brak and become involved in his quest, setting in motion a chain of events none of them can control.
