Alex Gardner, a genius gifted with psychic ability, uses that ability to hustle women and make money at the track. He is mysteriously abducted to work on an experimental government programme involving dream research on patients who experience a high frequency of nightmares. Alex initially refuses, but the threat of a taxation department audit forces him to agree. After a series of tests, he is connected to a machine that enables him to enter and actively participate in - and alter - disturbed patients' dreams and effect a cure for their mental traumas. Then he discovers he's actually a pawn in a covert intelligence programme and being trained as an assassin - to kill inside the dreams of the targets who then die in real life.
