  • Althalus, burgler, armed robber, is paid to steal a book by a sinister stranger named Ghend. Althalus sets off to the House at the End of the World where the book is kept. There, in the same room as the book Ghend described, he finds a talking cat. What he can't find as he turns around is the door by which he entered. By the time he sets out again, Althalus can read. He's read the book and discovered that the evil god Daeva is trying to unmake the world. The cat, whom Althalus calls Emerald, is in fact the god's sister, and she needs Althalus to prevent Daeva returning them all to primordial chaos. Althalus will teach her what she needs to know, which is how to lie, cheat and steal - 'Whatever works,' Emerald reflects.  Althalus is the first and foremost of a band of colourful helpers who will battle Daeva and his bizarre, deadly minions - and the existence of the world hangs in the balance.   • The story begins in the American Civil War, during the siege of Richmond, Virginia, the capital of the Confederate States of America. As famine and death ravage the city, five northern prisoners of war decide to escape by the unusual means of hijacking a balloon. The escapees are Cyrus Smith, a railroad engineer in the Union army; his black manservant Neb (short for Nebuchadnezzar), a former slave who had been freed by Smith; the sailor Bonadventure Pencroff; his protégé Harbert Brown; a young orphan boy;and the journalist Gedéon Spilett. The company is completed by Cyrus' dog "Top". After flying in stormy weather for several days, the group crash-lands on a cliff-bound, volcanic, deserted island. They name it "Lincoln Island" in honor of   President   Lincoln. With the knowledge of the brilliant engineer Smith, the five are able to sustain themselves on the island, producing fire, pottery, bricks, nitroglycerin, iron, a simple electric telegraph, a home on a stony cliffside called "Granite House", and even a seaworthy ship. Five castaways are washed up on a remote Pacific island where no human life exists - but is the island really deserted?   • Book III of The Tawny Man. A small and sadly untried coterie - the old assassin Chade, the serving-boy Thick, Prince Dutiful and his reluctant Skillmaster Fitz - sail toward the distant isle of Aslevjal. There they must fulfil the Narcheska's challenge: to lay the head of the dragon Icefyre, whom legends tell is buried  there deep beneath the ice, upon her hearth. Only then can their marriage proceed and put an end to the war between the two kingdoms. Having abandoned the Fool in Buckkeep, Fitz is guilt-stricken, but determined to keep the fate of his beloved friend at bay, since prophecy foretells the Fool's if he ever sets foot on the isle of the black dragon. But as their ship draws in towards Aslevjal a lone figure awaits them...
  • The classic children's fantasy adventure that was first published in 1863. Tom, a poor orphan, is employed by the villainous chimney-sweep, Grimes, to climb up inside flues to clear away the soot. While engaged in this dreadful task, he loses his way and emerges in the bedroom of Ellie, the young daughter of the house who mistakes him for a thief. He runs away, and, hot and bothered, he slips into a cooling stream, falls fast asleep - and becomes a water baby.  In this new life, he meets all sorts of aquatic creatures, including an engaging old lobster and other water babies before finding his way to St Branden's Isle, where he encounters the fierce Mrs Bedonebyasyoudid and the motherly Mrs Doasyouwouldbedoneby.  After a long and arduous quest to the Other-End-Of-Nowhere, Tom achieves his heart's desire.
  • Chronicles Of Counter Earth IV. Tarl Cabot pursues his mission for the Priest-Kings of Gor, seeking their last precious link to survival.
