  • Kay Scarpetta III.  In Richmond, Virginia, young lovers are dying. So far, four couples in the area have disappeared, only to be found months later as mutilated corpses. When the daughter of the president's newest drug czar vanishes along with her boyfriend, Dr. Kay Scarpetta knows time is short. Following a macabre trail of evidence that ties the present homicides to a grisly crime in the past, Kay must draw upon her own personal resources to track down a murderer who is as skilled at eliminating clues as Kay is at finding them...
  • Kay Scarpetta IX. A farmhouse destroyed by fire; a body amongst the ruins. Dr Kay Scarpetta, Chief Medical Examiner and consulting pathologist for the federal law enforcement agency ATF, is called out to a farmhouse in Virginia which has been destroyed by fire. In the ruins of the house she finds a body which tells a story of a violent and grisly murder. The fire has come at the same time as another even more incendiary horror: Carrie Grethen, a killer who nearly destroyed the lives of Scarpetta and those closest to her, has escaped from a forensic psychiatric hospital. Her whereabouts is unknown, but her ultimate destination is not, for Carrie has begun to communicate with Scarpetta, conveying her deadly - if cryptic - plans for revenge.
  • Scarpetta I. A serial killer is on the loose in Richmond, Virginia.  Three women have died, brutalised and strangled in their own bedrooms.  The killer appears to strike at random - but always early on Saturday mornings.  When Dr Kay Scarpetta, chief medical examiner is awakened at 2.33 a.m. she knows the news is bad.  There's a fourth victim.  Unless she can dig up new forensic evidence to help the police, there will be more.
  • Scarpetta IV. At 11.05 on a December evening, convicted murderer Ronnie Joe Waddell is pronounced dead in the electric chair.  At the morgue, Dr Scarpetta waits for Waddell's body.  Waddell's death is not the only event that freezing night:  the grotesquely wounded body of a young boy is found propped against a rubbish skip.  The two deaths seem unrelated, until Scarpetta recalls that the body of Waddell's victim had been arranged in a rather similar position.  Then comes a third murder with very few clues: old blood stains, fragments of feather and - the bloody fingerprint that points to the one suspect who could not have possibly committed the murder.
  • Kay Scarpetta XIII. Dr. Kay Scarpetta, now freelancing from South Florida, returns to the city that turned its back on her five years ago. Richmond, Virginia's recently appointed chief medical examiner claims that he needs Scarpetta's help to solve a perplexing crime. When she arrives, however, Scarpetta finds that nothing is as she expected: her former lab is in the final stages of demolition; the inept chief isn't the one who requested her after all; her old assistant chief has developed personal problems that he won't reveal; and a glamorous FBI agent, whom Scarpetta dislikes instantly, meddles with the case. Deprived of assistance from colleagues Benton and Lucy, who are embroiled in what appears to be an unrelated attempted rape by a stalker, Scarpetta is faced with investigating the death of a fourteen-year-old girl, working with the smallest pieces of evidence - traces that only the most thorough hunters can identify. She must follow the twisting leads and track the strange details in order to make the dead speak...and to reveal the sad truth that may be more than even she can bear .
  • Kay Scarpetta VI. The body was naked, female and found propped against a fountain in a bleak area of Central Park. The gunshot wound to the head, the sections of skin excised from the body, the displayed corpse all suggest to Dr Kay Scarpetta that Temple Brooks Gault is back at work.  She must track this most dangerous of killers in the pursuit of justice - and survival!
  • Andy Brazil No. 1. Deputy Chief Virginia West is having a bad day - another out of town businessman has been found murdered in his hire car; a wise ass detective has taken her parking spot; the new police headquarters is still a construction site and she's instructed by her boss to go out on patrol as escort to Andy Brazil, a rookie reporter on the local paper.  Not to mention the department in-fighting, court appearances, her boss's problems with an obese husband and a never ending stream of burglaries, busts - and bodies.
  • Kay Scarpetta VIII. Dublin, Ireland and Richmond, Virginia - separated by thousands of miles but linked by murder. Dr. Scarpetta, on a leisure stint in Ireland, has the perfect opportunity to find out if the murders on opposite sides of the Atlantic are linked.  Five dismembered, beheaded bodies were found in Ireland years ago - now four have been discovered in the US.   But the tenth corpse in Virginia is different.  There are vital discrepancies and evidence that the elderly victim was already seriously ill. A copy-cat killing - ghoulish, but not unusual. But when the next body is found, Scarpetta discovers that the killer is armed with the most lethal weapon on earth - smallpox.
