Book II of the Allways trilogy. Nichols shares his  real-life adventures and misadventures restoring his 16th-century Tudor cottage named "Allways" in Glatton, Huntingdonshire. He chronicles the chaotic and humorous process of modernizing the historic building, including installing central heating and electric lights; the trials of securing a clean water supply, which initially relied on digging a new well; the complex process of re-thatching the home's historic roof; and of course humorous observations of rural local life, gardening anecdotes, and interactions with eccentric neighbors - not to forget his mischievous dog Whoops, whom Nichols jokingly describes as an 'inveterate spy.'
