Book I of Abarat. Candy Quackenbush is a teenage girl frustrated with her life in Chickentown, Minnesota. After an argument with her teacher Candy leaves the school and goes to the edge of town, where she sees the remains of a lighthouse - which is incredibly strange because Chickentown is thousands of miles from the ocean. Led by John Mischief, a man whose brothers live on the horns on his head, Candy is carried by the ocean to the Abarat, a vast archipelago where every island is a different hour of the day - with roaming dragons and murderous wizards, mechanical bugs and miraculous cats. As she travels from island to island, she not only realises that she has been here before, but she has something to do - and that's save the Abarat from the dark, evil forces that are stirring at its heart.
