Willamina "Willie" Connolly is a red-headed twelve year old tomboy – cool, solitary and bookish, she is the only adored child of distinguished parents. Her father, Matt, is an author and Willamina, her mother, is a concert pianist. But Willie is only partly their child – she is the possessor of undreamed-of powers, powers that allow her to safeguard her world. At first, she deals only with schoolgirl annoyances. An unwanted school field trip is cancelled when the teacher falls ill. Willie wants a cat, and the dog she gets in its place is run over in traffic when it’s leash conveniently breaks. Then her mother Willamina is struck by crippling pains in her fingers and is unable to touch her beloved piano, and she and Matt are forced to cancel their European holiday, sparing Willie from dreaded incaraceration in summer camp. Worsening illness and despair pervade the household as the pain slowly drives Willamina to madness...is Willie responsible for the mounting horror around her? Her Uncle Jonathan, an investigator of psychic phenomena, is suspicious, but delays a confrontation until he is sure dark powrs are at work...but it may be too late…
