Almost 250 years ago, the starcruiser Argos reached the planet Destiny, carrying the first settlers. Those first hard years on the planet were marked by two life and future-changing events: First, the Argos deserted them, dashing all hopes of returning to Earth. The the landing craft, the Cavorite, disappeared. But the Cavorite's final voyage left an awesome impression: it seared the wide, smooth Road into the planet's surface.
