Book II of Downs-Lord. Several hundred years after the events of Downs-Lord Day Dawn, the Emperor Blades XXIII rules New-Wessex and humanity has come to terms - to a degree - with the ravening non-human killers known as the Null. Ambassadors pass between countries and species, but the Null's bloodlust is not slaked and the Emperor Blade's lilne has become mindlessly debauched. And the 'angels', who saved Blade's life on more than one occasion, seem to be falling out among themselves.
