Frank Ashby, an Oxford University Professor, has a secure, well-ordered life. When he ventures into the Swiss Alps for a well-earned holiday before his prospective appointment as president of his college, he is suddenly brought face to face with a midlife crisis when he meets two American ladies: Miss Caroline Hartley and her 18 year old ward Miss Elinor Hartley. Ashby eventually finds enjoyment in their company as a refreshing diversion from the exclusively masculine world he normally inhabits. But on his return to Oxford, he must fight a young professor who aspires to the college presidency and what's more, there's the unexpected arrival in Oxford of Miss Caroline and Miss Elinor.
