Twelve massive alien spacecraft appear in different locations worldwide, causing global panic and military mobilisation. Linguist Louise Banks and physicist Ian Donnelly are recruited by the U.S. Army to decipher the aliens' complex, circular written language to understand their purpose. Louise learns the Heptapods' language, which changes her perception of time, allowing her to experience past, present, and future simultaneously, much like the aliens do. The aliens are offering their language as a "tool" or "weapon" to help humanity in 3,000 years - but humans must to unite to receive it.
