 2044: Earth is a desert wasteland; humanoid robots, know as Pilgrims perform menial tasks for dwindling human populations in fortified cities.  Robots have two laws: they cannot harm humans; and they cannot alter themselves or other robots. Insurance agent Jacq Vaucan investigates a police officer shooting a robot that was seemingly modifying itself, a major violation.  He finds a robot stealing parts to repair itself, leading him to a "clocksmith" (a hacker/repairer) who might be the source of the self-modification.  It seems that the robots are developing consciousness and self-awareness, breaking their programming and potentially becoming a new form of life....Also stars Tim McInnerny and Melanie Griffith.
