Elizabeth Lane is a single New York girl writing regular columns about her fictitious Connecticut home, husband and baby - columns which are much admired by housewives across the country. Her publisher, unaware that she's an all round fraud, insists that she and her 'husband' host a dinner for returning war hero Jeff Jones, who is a big fan of her 'recipes'. Can she pull off a fake marriage to a friend who owns a rural property in Connecticut, arrange a baby and coerce her friend Chef Felix Bassenak - the source of her recipes - into helping out? Not to mention baby-swaps, a night in jail for accidentally stealing a horse and sleigh and falling in love with the returned war hero, all of which make for plenty of seasonal merriment.
