Willow Ulfgood, a Nelwyn (dwarf) farmer and aspiring magician, finds an abandoned baby girl and sets out to find a Daikini (tall person) to return it to its own kind. The first one he finds is a rogue swordsman, Madmartigan, who grudgingly agrees to help. Together they encounter the Fairy Queen Cherlindrea and learn the baby is Elora Danaan, and she is destined to end the reign of the evil Queen Bavmorda. They must seek the protection of the good sorceress Raziel, who has been enchanted by Bavmorda, return her wand and together they must fight to overcome the forces of darkness.
