Tea planter John Wiley and his new bride Ruth take up residence on his sprawling plantation 'Elephant Walk' in Ceylon - but there are ghosts to contend with, one being John's late father, 'the Governor' whose domineering presence casts a shadow over their daily lives. Ruth also must contend with the animosity from the sinister Apphuamy, the Governor's servant who regards Ruth as an interloper and an interference. The plantation is so named because the Governor purposely built it on the path of migration used by the elephants to get to their water source; and now high walls and guns keep the animals away. Ruth is the only European woman in the area; Apphuamy's insubordinate politeness continues, as do his eerie conversations with the late Governor; her husband begins to show flashes of imperious arrogance and it is inevitable that she begins to fall for Dick Carver, the plantation manager. When a cholera epidemic erupts and drought blights the land, will the high walls be enough to keep the thirst-maddened elephants out? Based on the Robert Standish of the same name.https://cosmiccauldronbooks.com.au/p/elephant-walk-robert-standish/
