In 1944, eight-year old Hannibal Lecter, his parents and his sister leave Lecter Castle during the German occupation of Lithuania for the safety of their hunting lodge in the woods. But during the Nazi retreat in the face of Soviet troops, they destroy a Soviet tank that had stopped at the lodge seeking water. The explosion kills every except Hannibal and his sister Mischa, who manage to struggle along on their own in the cottage - until five former Lithuanian militiamen, led by a Nazi collaborator come searching for food in the freezing winter. They kill his sister and Hannibal flees to his uncle's home in Paris. He learns his uncle is dead, but the man's mysterious Japanese widow, Lady Murasaki, welcomes him nonetheless. An aptitude for science helps Hannibal gain acceptance to medical school, where he hones the skills he needs to exact revenge for the atrocities committed on his family. https://cosmiccauldronbooks.com.au/p/hannibal-rising-thomas-harris-2/
