In March 1918, in a British officers' dugout near Saint-Quentin, France, the  heroic but alcoholic Captain Stanhope is terrified of cracking under pressure. Second Lieutenant Raleigh  arrives, excited to serve under his old hero Stanhope, unaware of Stanhope's severe drinking and psychological decline. Stanhope fears Raleigh will expose his alcoholism to his sister, whom he hopes to marry after the war. Struggling under such burdens and the grim realities of combat, Stanhope's company prepares for a dangerous daylight raid on German lines.
