- Ahmad ibn Fadlan, a poet and diplomat from Baghdad, is exiled after he falls in love with the wrong woman. He is sent on a diplomatic mission to the north, but his boat stops to restock at a Viking port where he gets drawn into their quest. The Vikings, led by Buliwyf, are on a mission to protect a distant village from a mysterious and deadly threat. Ibn Fadlan is reluctantly recruited to join the group of twelve Viking warriors, making him the 13th member of the fighting party. The Vikings are offended by his behavior, while he is disgusted by their rowdiness, but they must develop respect for each other if they are to defeat the cannibalistic tribe known as the Wendol.
