Sean Thornton, retired American boxer, is trying to put the tragedy of accidentally killing an opponent behind him. Returning to the the Irish town of his birth, he falls in love with fiery Mary Kate - and he is sorely tempted to put on the gloves again against her brother 'Red' Will, the town bully. Sean and Mary marry, but Red Will refuses to pay the dowry. Sean is determined not to use his fists and would rather walk away than deal with this challenge and stands firm, even when Mary calls him a coward. But when she boards a train to leave, he's read to take matters into his own hands. Also stars Ward Bond, Victor McLaglen and Barry Fitzgerald.
