In 1993 Maria Gesto disappeared after walking out of a supermarket in Hollywood. The case was quickly elevated from Missing Persons to Homicide, where Harry Bosch was assigned to the case. But the young woman never showed up - a case Bosch couldn't solve. Thirteen years later, Bosch is in the Open-Unsolved Unit, the Gesto file still on his desk. Then Raynard Waits, a man accused of two other killings, is willing to come clean in several other murders in a deal to avoid the death penalty. One is Maria's murder. Bosch will have to take Waits' confession to make sure he isn't scamming to avoid a date with death. Bosch must get close to the man he has sought and hated for thirteen years. He begins to crack when he realises that he and his partner missed a vital clue in 1993 that would have stopped the murders that followed the killing of Maria Gesto.
