The realm of the supernatural lies in the North and a complex religion of Gods and Goddesses dominates the South - a realm of bizarre, Gothic adventures. Young Llewellyn is an unhappy child in the southern city of Sunnashiven, estranged from his parents and comforted by an ailing local hedge witch who promises great things in his future. After the witch bears a child - Lord Cathe - and dies, Llewellyn has a desire for further learning and is allowed to enter school to train to become a religious magician.
