Evensong: Beverley Nichols

Madame Irela, an aging, once-legendary opera diva, lives in the past, surrounded by memories of grandeur, but her voice is noticeably deteriorating. Tormented by insecurity, Irela grows intensely jealous of a talented young newcomer capturing the public's adoration. Irela’s young niece and long-suffering paid companion, Pauline, bears the brunt of her aunt's erratic moods. Kober, Irela's long-time manager who helped forge her ruthless ambition is still by her side. Blinded by pride, Irela insists on performing, one last time, despite her vocal  deterioration...Said to be loosely based on Dame Nellie Melba, to whom Nichols was once personal secretary.
