There was no tranquillity in 1789 as the streets ran red with the blood of Revolution. On one side of the Channel was a country firmly in the grip of aristocratic and patrician government; on the other a country whose old systems had been clawed down by the advocates of revolution. Young David Treloar left his desolated home on the Devon coast and made his way to France. It was there that he he saw the Revolution for what it was - a many headed monster that had obliterated the reason for its existence; it was there that he fell in love with the daughter of an old Parisian wig-maker; it was from there the lovers escaped, flirting with danger to arrive in England only for David, ironically, to be suspected as a French spy.
