Each chapter is told from a different character’s point of view but linked by the presence of the same man. Daniel, 14, is orphaned, and become the ward of an elderly relative. When he's expelled from Eton, the guardian sends the troubled boy to another distant relative in Italy, hoping that he would have no more responsibility. Daniel enjoys the freedom of the bohemian lifestyle, and returns to England to join the army when war breaks out. He meets and marries Jane, who love him and supports him - but when she suddenly dies, he hits the road, abandoning his home and his work - but a gallery of characters and unusual experiences just may be what Daniel needs...and although he may not realise it, Daniel is on a spiritual journey that will touch many lives for the greater good.
