Commemorative publication of the outbreak of World War I, this book is a reminder of the great efforts made in Yorkshire made by those who cared for the cared for the men who came home. This is a detailed account of the role of Red Cross Auxiliary Hospitals in the North Riding. Hospitals were set up in all sorts of properties throughout the district with more than 10,000 patients being treated in 1918 alone. The authors took part in in a recreation of a WWI hospital for the centenary and their interest grew from there as they uncovered all sorts of stories from advances in medical treatments, to children gathering sphagnum moss, from discoveries regarding nutrition and the challenge of securing food for the wounded in their care. As the project got underway, the authors uncovered a wealth of stories, information and artefacts. Illustrated with archival photographs and documents. https://www.heritagefund.org.uk/stories/changing-lives-nursing-duo-hits-history-big-time
