During the dark years of the Ninth Century, when all seemed lost, and when so many English people were sunk in dejection, King Alfred, known to-day as Alfred the Great, tried to inspire his people with hope and courage, rallying his forces and working hard in many ways to rescue his country from the plight into which it had been allowed to blunder. He freed Wessex from the Danes, a seemingly impossible feat, in association with a large number of other characters which lead to the crowning victory at Ethandune (Edington). There is much fighting and love interest and scenes of a life in the woods and fields, villages and country lanes as well as the clash of swords, and the hoarse shouts of warriors.
