Mother Earth, Father Sky: Sue Harrison

In the freezing mists and tundra of the last ice age, a prehistoric village is attacked and its people brutally slaughtered by the vicious Short Ones. The only survivor is Chagak, a young girl - her family and the young hunter she was to marry are all murdered. Struggling for survival in the wilderness she eventually finds an island where the old man Shuganan, a carver of ivory, offers her shelter and companionship. But they are found by one of the murdering tribe, who wants to make Chagak become his wife. Chagak must endure the elements and hostile tribesman who threaten to destroy her until she can decide whether she can allow herself to love again, and whether any love is strong enough to overcome the fear of loss.
