Every year at least one large, well-founded ship and a number of smaller ones are posted missing at Lloyds - from the 20,000 ton Brazilian battleship São Paulo which vanished off the Azores in 1951 down to trawlers like the Kingston Peridot and the St. Romanus. In the interests of research, Commander Villiers has visited the ports from which many of these vanished ships sailed and has had access to official reports and findings.
