Visiting Pilate in Jerusalem, Theophilus is present when Jesus is brought before the Procurator as a traitor to Caesar and a Jewish heretic. Even as Pilate is washing his hands, the scourged Christ looks at Theophilus and says: "I will be your friend, Theophilus. I will never leave you. Remember that."
