Sundar Singh was born in 1889 and educated by a sadhu (Sikh holy man) and also educated at the Ewing Christian School. When his mother died when he was fourteen, he became violent and despairing, persecuted Christians and ridiculed their faith. He knew he was leading a meaningless life, and could not believe in anything. He determined to commit suicide and asked to see the True God before he did so. He had a vision of Jesus and thereafter he lived as a holy man, declaring he needed no home or possessions. His father disowned him; his brother tried to poison him. Yet he travelled the world, unswerving in his Christian faith and love for his fellow man and having some rather extraordinary adventures. He is believed to have died in the foothills of the Himalayas in 1929.
