France, 1254. On a mountain high in the Pyrenees, the monastery of St Lazarus is a forbidding place. Behind its ramparts and battlements, heretical acts are said to take place. There is also the rumour of a secret - a secret so important and so dangerous that its keepers would be prepared to kill before permitting its revelation. At the end of a bitter winter, a delegation arrives to investigate the monks of St Lazarus. Andre, a Knight of the Templar Order, and his young scribe, Christian de St Armand, have been sent by the King of France to oversee the investigation. When an elderly monk dies under strange circumstances, Andre and Christian start to unravel the mystery at the heart of St Lazarus. Hampering them at every turn is Rainiero Sacconi, the Pope's ambitious inquisitor. He seems determined to condemn the community of monks. But why? By the time the secret of St Lazarus is revealed, hypocrisy and violence will be exposed. And for Andre and Christian, the investigation will turn into a fight not only for their souls, but also for their lives.
