Crowner John Mystery I. November, 1194 A.D. Sir John de Wolfe, appointed by Richard the Lionheart as the first coroner for the County of Devon, rides out to the village of Widecombe for an inquest on an unidentified body. But when he returns to Exeter, he's furious to find that his own brother-in-law, Sheriff Richard de Revelle is intent on thwarting the investigation, particularly as it has emerged that the dead man is a Crusader and a member of one of Devon's finest, most honourable families.
