Australia in the 1860s, the time of the roaming gangs of bushrangers, stealing gold and horses and seeking refuge among the country people who often protected the outlaws from the government troopers. Many bushrangers have been immortalised in song and legend: Donahoe, Frank the Darkie and Ben Hall, all of whom preferred to die with their boots on that to perish in irons.
