In one of the most hostile and lawless places in the Russian Federation, an American gas company executive is found dead, the apparent victim of a casual robbery or the local mafia. Alexei Vorontsyev, chief of detectives, finds his investigation blocked from every side. In Washington, the chief executive of the gas company and his wife are found murdered in their mansion.
