Molly Gibson, devoted daughter of Hollingford's Dr Gibson, is upset by her father's marriage to the attractive but shallow and selfish widow Mrs. Kirkpatrick. The arrival on the scene of Cynthia, Mrs. Kirkpatrick's own daughter, introduces a new element of romantic intrigue and glamour into Molly's life.
